EXOTICA is a body of work that reinterprets and follows the imaginary steps of adventurers and explorers who dared complex and dangerous expeditions in the “wild territories” of Mexico along the IX – XX centuries. These dangerous expeditions led mainly to great scientific discoveries documented in valuable chronicles and binnacles and shared around the whole World. Being born and raised in Mexico as the first generation of European migrants, there is a direct link in between these famous explorers and my family roots. These expeditions are also related in a way with the eternal human need to find his own paradise which has a wide range of interpretations. The Bible presents Paradise as a garden in which the first couple of human beings live free of any disease and death. But when they disobey God, they remain expelled and expelled of these perfect conditions of life forever. In cosmological contexts it describes the world before it was tainted by evil, and often described as a “higher place” in contrast to this world or underworlds such as Hell.  In the tourism industry it is used as a tool to escape the daily routine, and a temptation to sell prohibition and exclusiveness accessible to a minority of people. Finally, in the art history it has been revealed throughout many periods of time in a great variety of ways, mainly as the opposing place of hell.

Alessandro Bo

Born in Mexico City, 1982. After living and studying photography four years in Australia, Bo returns home and since then published for various national and international magazines. Recently nominated as the “Ones to watch 2019” and published by the British Journal of Photography. He is currently finishing his second photobook publication called Exótica by Inframundo Editorial. His work has been exhibited around Mexico, United States and Dominican Republic. He has been published in digital magazines such as It´s Nice That, C41, Lenscratch, Der Greif among others. In 2018 he  publishes his first photobook called Smail by Inframundo Editorial which was shortlisted at Photo España 2019. Selected to be part of the XVIII Biennal at Centro de la Imagen 2018, and finalist at the 2018 Lucie Award Emerging Artist scholarship. In 2018 he is winner of the European Master of Contemporary Photography at IED University at Madrid, Spain. In 2015 some of his work was selected to be published in a collective photobook called Street Photography 2015 with Acuity Press – Photo District News.
